Dover, Del. (Feb. 28, 2019) --- The schedule for Delaware State's weekend series against Marist (N.Y.) at Soldier Field has again been altered.
The Hornets and Red Foxes are now scheduled to play a single game on Saturday beginning at 2:00 p.m. and a doubleheader on Sunday starting at noon.
Delaware State is off to a 2-3 start this season, winning one out of three at The Citadel (Feb. 15-17) and splitting a doubleheader at North Carolina Central last Sunday.
Marist brings a 3-3 record into the weekend series. The Red Foxes dropped their first three games to William & Mary (Feb. 15-17) before sweeping a three-game series at Presbyterian (Feb. 23-24).
The Hornet pitching staff has allowed four runs or less in three of the five games and has held opponents to a .240 batting average. DSU hurlers have a combined earned run average of 4.28, while striking out 37 and walking 18 in 40 innings pitched.
Lefty starter Garrett Lawson (jr.) has shined in the early going, collecting both wins (2-0) and posting a 0.77 ERA in two starts. Lawson has allowed just six hits, while striking out 14 and walking five in 11.2 innings of work. He was the winner in the Hornets' 3-1 season-opening win at the Citadel on Feb. 15, giving up just four hits and a run in 6.2 innings.
Sean McGrath has yet to record a decision, but has a 2.00 ERA (two earned runs in nine innings), eight strikeouts and five walks in two starts.
Darnell Maisonet struck out nine North Carolina Central batters in five innings in his lone start on Feb. 24.
Delaware State hitters are hoping for a change of fortunes at typically batter-friendly Soldier Field.
So far this season, the Hornets are hitting .192 as a team, with 29 hits in 151 at bats. DSU has just four extra hits and is homerless in the first five games.
Outfielder Arthur Burrell (so.) has been a bright spot at the plate, batting .600 (six-for-10), with two runs scored and a RBI in three games.
Miquel Rivera is second on the team with a .333 average, collecting four hits, including a double, in 12 at bats.
