HORNETS UPENDED BY TIGERS IN MID-WEEK CONTEST

Towson, Md. (Apr. 18, 2018) --- Delaware State scored two first inning runs, but was shut down the rest of the way in a 6-2 loss to Towson at Schuerhholz Park this afternoon.

The Tigers completed a two-game season sweep of the Hornets to improve to 11-25 this season, while the Hornets fell to 5-29.


Logan Burke was 3-for-4 with a home run and three runs batted in, while Billy Lennox and Richie Palacios also collected three hits to lead the Tigers.


Todd Henry was the only Delaware State player with more than one hit in the contest. Darnell Maisonet and Cole Garey drove in runs for the Hornets.    


DSU opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning. Henry walked to lead off the game and advanced to third base when Miguel Rivera followed with a double. Henry scored the game's first run on a groundout by Maisonet. The Hornets had runners at third and first with one out when Garey grounded out to third, scoring Rivera to Delaware State a 2-0 lead.


Despite allowing four hits, Hornet starter Juan Sanchez kept Towson off the board before running into trouble in the third. Palacios led off the Towson third with a home run to cut DSU's lead to 2-1. There were two outs with men on third and second when Craig Alleyne singled up middle, scoring both runners to put the hosts in front 3-2.


The Hornet bullpen kept the Towson off the board for the next three innings, but the Tigers broke through again in the seventh. Burke smacked a three-run homer off DSU reliever Chandler Fitzgerald to stretch the TU lead to four runs.


Towson starter Josh Seils (1-1) threw five innings to record the win. He allowed five hits and both Delaware State runs, while striking out one and walking three.


Sanchez (0-4) suffered the loss for the Hornets.


Delaware State was outhit 14-6 in the game.  


The Hornets return to MEAC North play with a three-game series against Maryland-Eastern Shore this weekend (Apr. 21-22). The Hornets and Hawks will play a doubleheader on Saturday at DSU's Soldier Field. Game one is set for 12:00 p.m. The series will conclude with a single game on Sunday at Perdue Stadium, home of the minor league Delmarva Shorebirds, beginning at 6:00 p.m.
