Dover, Del. (Nov. 13, 2016) --- Texas Southern played a game in the Lone Star State on Saturday evening and flew to the East Coast this morning, but still possessed the energy to get by Delaware State 74-61 in a men's basketball contest in Memorial Hall this afternoon.
The Tigers had four players score in double-figures. Seven-foot center Marvin Jones had 15 points and a game-high 21 rebounds, while Dulani Robinson contributed 20 points, highlighted by four three-point field goals to lead TSU (1-1).
Jelani McCloud added 14 points and Derrick Griffin 10 (4-4 FGs) for the Tigers.
DeAndre Haywood led three Delaware State players in double figures with 20 points on eight-for-12 shooting from the field.
Devin Morgan added 12 points (three three-point FGs) and Kavon Waller 11 for the Hornets (1-1).
Texas Southern was ahead 30-26 at the break and led by as many as 17 points in the second half.
Delaware State had a better shooting percentage in the game, but was badly outrebounded and plagued by missed free throws.
The Hornets were 24-for-49 from the field (40%), including six-of-15 from three-point territory (40%).
Texas Southern shot 38.1% for the game, connecting on 24-of-63 shots overall and seven-of-27 from beyond the arc (25.9%).
The Tigers outrebounded the Hornets 46-23, highlighted by a 22-5 advantage on offensive boards.
Delaware State was seven-for-15 from the free throw line (46.7%), while Texas Southern was 19-of-24 at the stripe (79.2%)
The Hornets return to action on Wednesday (Nov. 16) at UMBC. Game time is 7 p.m. in Baltimore, Md.
