THE GAME
Delaware State (0-13) is home for the first time since Nov. 21 to take on Summit University (Pa.), formerly Baptist Bible College. The Hornets ended a nine-game road swing with a 75-47 loss at Texas Christian in their last outing on Dec. 28. Dana Raysor (so.), making his second start of the season, led DSU with a season-high 17 points in the contest. He was six-for-11 overall from the field and four-of-seven on three-point shots. Freshman guard Devin Morgan added 11 points for the Hornets at TCU, his fourth straight double-figure scoring game. Morgan is Delaware State's leading scorer this season at 9.3 points per game. He also has a team-high 21 three-point field goals (21-61). Junior guard DeAndre Haywood is second on the Hornets in scoring (9.2 ppg), and tops in assists (30) and steals (12). Freshman center Demola Onifade leads the Hornets in rebounding (3.8 pg) and has a team-high 13 blocks.
Summit (1-9) has been idle since a 71-39 loss to Haverford on Dec. 12. The Defenders hit just 16 of their 68 shots from the field (23.5%), including five-of-32 (15.6%) from three-point territory in the contest. Summit posted its lone victory of the season, 87-79, vs. Keystone on Dec. 2. Senior guard Abe Valentine tops the defenders in scoring 16.8 points per game. He also leads the club with 27 assists. Valentine tallied a career-high 38 points vs. Rosemont on Dec. 9. He was 15-for-19 from the field, including five-of-seven on three-point shots in that game. Senior guard Dan Decker is second on the Defenders in scoring at 13.9 ppg and tops the team with 23 three-point field goals (23-for-58). Decker had a season-high 27 points in the Dec. 2 win over Keystone. Senior forward Adam Brinkley is Summit's leading rebounder at 6.4 per game.
HORNETS vs. Defenders series history (DSU leads 2-0)
The Hornets and Defenders are meeting for the third time. The teams have met in each of the last two seasons at DSU's Memorial Hall, when Summit was under the name Baptist Bible. The Hornets won the first meeting 72-47 on Dec. 2, 2013. The teams also met last season (Nov. 17, 2014), with Delaware State coming out on top 104-63. DeAndre Haywood led the Hornets with 17 points, while Todd Hughes came off the bench to add 15 in the contest. The Hornets shot 55.6% from the field in the first half (20-for-36) en route to a 53-28 lead a the break. DSU tied its season scoring high in the game.
