Dover, Del. (June 5, 2019) --- Delaware State left-handed pitcher Garrett Lawson (jr.; Dover, Del.) has been selected by the Los Angeles Angels in the 19th round of the 2019 Major League Baseball Draft today.

Lawson, the 2019 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Pitcher-of-the-Year, is the Hornets’ first MLB draft pick since pitcher Dan Perkins was selected by the Colorado Rockies in the 27th round in 2009.

“This is a tremendous honor for me and Delaware State,” said Lawson. “Although I was pretty much assured of being drafted, it’s still stressful while waiting for your name to be called. I’ve worked hard to get to this point and I’m going to give everything I have to take advantage of this opportunity.”

A three-time MEAC Pitcher-of-the-Week, Lawson was 7-3 with a MEAC-best 1.85 earned run average during the 2019 regular season. He also led the league with a .196 opponent batting average and tied for the conference high with 97 strikeouts, averaging 11.2 Ks per nine innings, during the regular year.

Delaware State head baseball coach J.P. Blandin says Lawson has the tools to earn to a shot to compete at the professional level.

“After being sidelined by injury for much of our 2018 season, Garrett came back in great shape and scored high marks on the charts of pro scouts this season,” said Blandon of the sixth DSU draft pick during his tenure with the Hornets.

“The scouts were impressed with Garrett’s athleticism, his low-to-mid 90s fastball, solid breaking ball and command of his pitches. He certainly worked hard to earn this opportunity and we’re extremely proud of him.”

Lawson had a career-high 14 strikeouts in seven innings in a two-hit 10-0 victory over Coppin State on Apr. 12, struck out 10 without a walk in a 14-0 win at Norfolk State on Apr. 27, and did not allow an earned run while striking out nine in eight innings of a 5-1 victory over Coppin State on Mar. 22.

The former Dover High School star also received strong interest from the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Yankees before being selected by the Angels.

After the expected signing of a contract in the next few days, Lawson says he’s likely to soon be assigned to one the Angels’ rookie teams.

Lawson is the highest Delaware State major league draft choice since pitcher Eric Cater was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the 10th round of the 2003 draft.

Other recent Delaware State MLB draft picks are Shawn Phillips (2004 in 20th round by Texas Rangers),  Scott Martin (2003 in 34th round by Chicago White Sox); Tim Vaillancourt (2002 in 31st round by Arizona Diamondbacks); and Pedro Swann (1991 in 26th round by Atlanta Braves).
