Orlando, Fla. (Feb. 9, 2019) --- Delaware State posted a 2-3 record in Saturday traditional matches to stand 11th in the 14-team Sunshine State Women’s Bowling Classic with a 5-5 overall record.
The Hornets, ranked 12th in the latest National Tenpin Coaches Association Top 25 poll, opened Saturday’s competition with a 933-885 loss to No. 18 Maryville (Mo.).
DSU fell to No. 2 Vanderbilt in its next match, 994-890. The Hornets posted their first win of the day, 851-569, over fellow Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference member Bethune-Cookman.
Delaware State dropped its third match of the day to a nationally-ranked opponent, falling to No. 3 Nebraska 980-879 and ended the day with a 914-837 victory over No. 25 Youngstown State.
Elizabeth Laird (sr.) was DSU’s top performer, placing 26th out of 93 competitors with a total pinfall of 951 for a five-game average of 190.2, highlighted by a season-best 246 vs. Bethune-Cookman.
Nebraska is the two-day tournament leader with a total pinfall 10,093 (201.9 avg.). Vanderbilt is second at 9,923 (198.5).
Eleven of the nation’s top 25 teams are competing in the tournament.
The Hornets will begin Sunday’s final day with a Baker bracket match against 12th place Monmouth.
