Dover, Del. (Dec. 5) --- Delaware State (2-4) dismantles Cheyney (0-7) 79-59, in their final non-conference home game of the season. NaJai Pollard turned in another strong effort at both ends of the floor, and the Lady Hornets responded well after their loss to St. John’s last week.

Pollard led the Lady Hornets with 32 points, 16 rebounds, seven blocks (tied for single game record), and three steals. It is her second 30-point & 15-rebound performance and three games.

Lanayjha Ashe added 19 points (eight in the fourth quarter), eight rebounds, four assists, and two steals.

Keke Barber tallied 15 points, two rebounds, two steals, and one assist.

DSU jumped out to an 8-0 lead to start the game, highlighted by a three-pointer from Keke Barber.

Cheyney momentarily were able to get their footing and trailed just 10-5, with 3:56 left in the first quarter. The Lady Hornets closed the quarter on a 10-3 run taking a 20-8 lead into the second quarter.

Cheyney cut the deficit down to just three points, midway through the second quarter. The Lady Hornets again responded with a furious 14-4 run capped off by a buzzer beating three from Keke Barber, to give DSU a 38-25 lead entering the halftime break.

DSU scored 16 of their 20 points in the paint during the third quarter, to run away with the game.  The Lady Hornets pushed the pace and attacked the basket to end the game with 56 points in the paint (season high).

“You see at times we’ll push the ball with pace and get good quality shots.” Head coach Caputo said. “One glaring (stat) to me was we were 2-of-20 (on three-point field goal attempts) I told my team we got to score in the paint tonight, they did a good job of that.”

Delaware State extended their lead to 26 points, their largest lead of the game, after Lanayjha Ashe split through multiple defenders for a layup off the glass, with 6:38 left in the fourth quarter.

NaJai Pollard recorded her seventh block of the game, with 44 seconds left, to tie the school record for most blocks in a single game (Amber Bogard recorded seven blocks vs. Norfolk State on March 9th, 2015).

Delaware State made 34-of-74 (45.9%) field goal attempts, just 2-of-20 (10.0%) from three-point range, and 9-of-12 (75.0%) on free throw attempts.

Cheyney shot 20-of-54 (37.0%) from the field, 5-of-10 (50.0%) on three-point attempts, and 14-of-18 (77.8%) from the charity stripe.

NaJai Pollard passed Raquel Collier for seventh in school history for most points in a career. She is just two points away from of passing Carlene Albury for sixth most points in a career. Pollard also is just seven rebounds away from passing Barbara Burgess for fifth most rebounds in school history for a career.


The Lady Hornets have six straight road games, starting with Xavier on Dec. 9th tip-off starts at 2:00 pm. They will not have a home game until Jan. 7th for their conference home opener vs. Coppin State.
