Dover, Del. (Mar. 20, 2018) --- The Delaware State bowling team continues to rake in awards for its stellar 2017-18 season. The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference announced today that DSU’s Alexis Neuer (so.; Lewisburg, Pa.) has been selected as the league’s 2017-18 Bowler-of-the-Year, in voting by conference head coaches and sports information representatives announced today.

In addition, Delaware State’s Kayla Stamm was chosen by her peers as MEAC Coach-of-the-Year.

Also Hornet senior Chelsey Merklinger (Kinzers, Pa.) joins Neuer on the All-MEAC First Team, while fellow DSU senior Elizabeth Burkholder (Lancaster, Pa.) was an All-MEAC Second Team pick.

Neuer, a five-time 2017-18 MEAC Bowler-of-the-Week, is the first Hornet to capture the league’s Bowler-of-the-Year award.

The honor is the latest achievement for Neuer, who earlier this month qualified for the 2018 United States Bowling Congress National Collegiate Singles Championship for the second year in a row after placing second among 174 competitors with a total pinfall of 1279 for a six-game average of 213.2 in the USBC sectional round.  The sectionals performance was highlighted by her career collegiate-high of 296, also a DSU singles record and tops in the MEAC this season.  

A Preseason All-MEAC First Team selection, Neuer also competed in the USBC national singles championships as a freshman in 2017. She also earned a coveted spot on the USA Junior (under 20) National Team and shared the MEAC’s Rookie-of-the-Year award last year.

Neuer has been selected as this season’s MEAC Bowler-of-the-Week on Nov. 14, Nov. 21, Jan. 23, Mar. 6 and Mar. 13.

Currently averaging 205.3 in traditional games this season, Neuer was recognized by as a top five collegiate Bowler-to-Watch and was named Most Outstanding Performer at the Monmouth Hawk Flight Invitational this season.

Stamm is DSU’s first MEAC Coach-of-the-Year since Kim Terrell-Kearney won the award in 2009.

She has led the Hornets to the MEAC Northern Division championship in each of her two seasons. DSU captured the North title with a 20-4 division record. 
Delaware State is No. 7 in the latest National Tenpin Coaches Association Top 25 poll. The Hornets have been ranked as high as No. 6 in the monthly poll this season, the school’s best showing since reaching No. 3 in 2010.

Merklinger, a 2015-16 All-MEAC First Team selection and a third team honoree last season, is second on the Hornets with a 197.5 average this year. She posted a season-high 253 at the Monmouth Hawk Flight on Mar. 3 this season.  

Burkholder, named today as the MEAC Bowler-of-the-Week for the second time this season, is third on the team with a 189.7 average this season. She was an All-MEAC First Team selection a year ago and a third team pick during the 2015-16 season.   

Delaware State will return to action this weekend at the 2018 MEAC Bowling Championship in Chesapeake, Va. The Hornets are one of two No. 1 seeds in the tournament. DSU will be seeking its second MEAC Tournament crown in three years and fourth overall. The Hornets won conference championships in 2009, 2010 and 2016.
