Dover, Del. (Nov. 2, 2017) --- The Delaware State volleyball team begins a two-match homestand on Friday (Nov. 3) against Coppin State. The contest begins at 6 p.m. in Memorial Hall. The Hornets will also host Morgan State on Sunday (Nov. 5) at 3 p.m.
DSU currently stands at fifth in the 2017 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Northern Division standings with a 3-5 division record, one game behind fourth place Morgan State (4-4).
The top four teams in the division race qualify for the MEAC Tournament later this month in Princess Anne, Md.
The Hornets are looking for a season sweep of Coppin State. DSU defeated the Eagles 3-1 on Oct. 18 in Baltimore, Md. Sabrina Szmajduch (sr.) had career-highs of 20 kills and 20 digs to key the victory.
Delaware State libero Alliyah McBean (sr.) is tops on the team and fifth in the MEAC in digs at 3.6 per match (295 total). McBean has reached double figures in digs in 17 of the Hornets’ 24 contests this season.
DSU also features one of the MEAC’s top setters in senior Gabriella Enriquez, who ranks seventh in the league in assists at 6.8 per set (555 total). Enriquez passed the 1000 assist mark at Delaware State in the Hornets’ last outing. She’s also the team leader with 23 service aces.
Senior NaKia Jones and freshman Kiera Holtzclaw are 1-2 on the Hornets in blocks. Jones leads the team with 41, while Holtzclaw is a close second with 40.
Following the weekend homestand, the Hornets will wrap up their regular season schedule at Hampton on Nov. 10 and a home match against UMES on Nov. 12
