Dover, Del. (Oct. 8, 2017) --- Delaware State outscored Norfolk State 15-7 in the deciding fifth set to post its first win of the season, 3-2 over the Spartans in Memorial Hall this afternoon.
The Hornets won the first two sets (25-20, 25-19), but the Spartans took sets three and four (27-25, 25-20) to even the match.
The score was 1-1 in the fifth set before Delaware State ran off the next seven points to take control. DSU’s Sabina Szmajduch had a kill and service ace, while Norfolk State committed five errors to aid the Hornet rally.
NaKia Jones and Sydney Armbrister each had two kills later in the set to help Delaware State open up a 14-4 lead.
Norfolk State scored the next three points, but a kill by Szmajduch gave DSU the set and match.
Szmajduch tied for match-high honors with 18 kills on 48 attempts (.229 pct.) to lead the Hornets. She also tied her season high with 10 digs and recorded two service aces.
Gabriella Enriquez had a career-high 44 assists, while Alliyah McBean recorded a season-best 23 digs to raise her career total to 1,027.
McBean had seven digs and Szmajduch four kills to lead the Hornets to the first set win.
Delaware State posted a .324 attack percentage (15 kills/4 errors/34 attacks) to highlight its win in the second set.
The Hornets, who fell 3-2 to Hampton on Friday, are 1-2 in the MEAC (1-17 overall). Norfolk State fell to 3-14 overall and 0-4 in the MEAC.
Delaware State will play its next five matches on the road, beginning with a visit to NJIT on Tues. (Oct. 10).
The Hornets return home Oct. 24 against Maryland-Baltimore County (6:00 p.m.).
