Princess Anne, Md. (Sep. 15, 2017) --- The Delaware State volleyball team was one set away from its first victory of the season, but couldn’t hold on in a 3-2 loss to North Carolina-Ashville at the 2017 Henson’s Hawk Invitational at Maryland-Eastern Shore today.

The Hornets also dropped a tournament contest to host MDES 3-1 later in the day.

In the UNC-Ashville match, Delaware State took the opening set 25-17 for its first set win of the season. The Hornets opened up a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five contest with a 25-21 victory in the second set.

Ashville stayed alive in the match with a 25-17 win in the third set and evened the contest with a 25-14 victory in set four.

The Bulldogs won the deciding fifth set 15-8 to win the match.

Sabina Szmajduch led the Hornets with a season-high 19 kills, while DSU’s Gabriella Enriquez led all players with 34 assists, her best this season.

Three Hornets reached double-figures in digs, led by Alliyah McBean’s season-high 18, also tops among all players.  McBean has 10-or-more digs in eight of the Hornets’ 12 contests this season and stands at 947 in her career.

Taula Leimaluhia recorded 12 digs and Szmajduch 10 to post her second “double-double” of the season in the contest.

In the MDES match, the Hornets dropped the opening set but evened the contest with a 25-22 victory in the second set.  The Hawks won 25-12 and 25-11 in sets three and four to claim the match.

Enriquez again led all players with 28 assists, while Szmajduch was tops on the Hornets with 13 kills to give her 32 for the day.

Delaware State (0-12) will take on Campbell in a MDES Tournament contest on Saturday.
