Dover, Del. (Nov. 14, 2019) ---Delaware State’s hopes to compete in the Mid-Eastern Athletic  Conference Volleyball Tournament for the first time in nine years comes down to the final weekend of the regular season. The Hornets are home for their last two regular season matches, beginning with a visit by Coppin State on Fri. (Nov. 15) at 4:00 p.m. in Memorial Hall. DSU will play its final regular season  contest at home on Sunday against Morgan State (2:00 p.m.).

Delaware State is currently tied with Maryland-Eastern four fourth place in the MEAC North standings with 6-7 division records, although MDES holds the tie-breaker by virtue of sweeping the Hornets in their two meetings this season. The top four teams in the division race qualify for the post season championship tournament.

Maryland-Eastern Shore will host Morgan State on Friday and Coppin State this Sunday. The Hornets will need the Hawks to lose at least one of those weekend matches to have a shot at tournament play.

Coppin State is just one game ahead of DSU and Maryland-Eastern Shore at 7-6. The Eagles defeated the Hornets 3-0 in their first 2019 meeting last month. Delaware State came from behind to stun Morgan State 3-2 in their earlier meeting in October. The Bears are second in the North standings at 9-4.

The Hornets have not competed in the tournament since 2010. DSU’s 11 overall wins this season (11-17) under first-year head coach Bruce Atkinson are the most by the program since the 2010 season.
