Norfolk, Va. (Oct. 7, 2019) --- Delaware State outside hitter Jordan Vang (fr.) has been selected as the
Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference top volleyball rookie for the second week in a row, while DSU’s Jelena Dukic (jr.) has been recognized as the league’s most outstanding setter in last seven days.
Vang was again named MEAC Rookie-of-the-Week after tallying 33 kills (4.7 per set) on a .292 hitting percentage, to go along with 11 digs and five service aces in two matches. She had a career-high 18 kills (.351 pct.) and also a personal best four service aces in the Hornets’ 3-1 victory over Norfolk State on Oct. 6. The Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, native recorded 15 kills, four aces and an ace vs. defending conference champ Howard on Oct. 4.
For the season, Vang is third on the Hornets with 120 total kills and a 2.45 kill per set average.
Dukic has been honored as the MEAC’s Setter-of-the-Week for the first time this season after tallying 83 assists (11.9 per set) and 21 digs in two matches. She had 50 helpers, 10 digs and two aces in DSU’s win over Norfolk State last Sunday, and tallied 33 assists and 11 digs two days earlier against Howard.
So far this season, the Futog, Serbia, native ranks second in the MEAC in total assists (562) and assists per set (8.39).
Her 53 assists at St. Peter’s on Sep. 11 and 52 vs. Fairleigh Dickinson on Sep. 20 rank third and fourth best, respectively, in the MEAC this season. The 52 assists at Fairleigh Dickinson are tops in a four set match in the league this year.
Delaware State has collected a total of six MEAC weekly awards this season. Cookie Burnett was named MEAC Rookie-of-the-Week on Sep. 9 and 16, and Anadys Chemelis was the first Rookie-of-the-Week honoree this season on Sep. 2.
The Hornets will play their next five matches on the road, beginning with a visit to the Citadel next Sunday (Oct. 13) in Charleston, S.C.
The next home match is Oct. 25 vs. Bethune-Cookman (6:00 p.m.).
