Dover, Del. (Oct. 4, 2019) --- Defending MEAC volleyball champ Howard continued its recent dominance over Delaware State, posting a hard-fought 3-0 victory over the Hornets in DSU’s home 2019 home opener this evening. The scores were 27-25, 25-22 and 25-19.
The Bison stretched their win streak to 13 over Delaware State since 2012, with the last six victories by 3-0 scores.
Howard used a balanced attack in its latest victory over the Hornets. Myca Mitchell and Kira Porter led the Bison with nine kills each, while Tamar Wells added seven.
Delaware State’s Jordan Vang (fr.) led all players with 15 kills, while Anadys Valentin (fr.) tallied 11. Hornet setter Jelena Dukic (jr.) recorded a match-high 33 assists and tied for top honors with 11 digs.
DSU got off to a fast start in the match, opening up an 8-3 lead on a service ace by Valentin. The Hornets stretched their lead to six points on two occasions, the last time 20-14 on a kill by Sydney Armbrister off a feed from Dukic.
Howard answered with an 8-1 run, and opened up a 22-21 lead on a Hornet error.
Delaware State rallied again and pulled to within a point of winning the set on a kill by Vang.
The Bison scored three of the last four points to claim the set win.
There were eight ties in the second set before Howard took control.
The score was 11-11 when the Bison began a 7-1 run. Mitchell capped off the rally with a kill to give Howard an 18-12 lead.
Delaware State pulled to within two points later in the set (21-23), but could get no closer.
Howard posted a .429 hitting percentage (15 kills/3 errors/28 attacks to highlight its win in set three.
The Bison (6-11; 3-0 MEAC) recorded a .300 attack percentage for the match, tallying 38 kills and 11 errors on 90 attempts.
Delaware State (6-11; 1-2 MEAC) had 42 kills and 21 errors on 102 attempts for a .206 hitting percentage for the match.
The Hornets return to action with a MEAC contest against at home Norfolk State this Sunday (Oct. 6) . The match begins at 2:00 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
