Lewisburg, Pa. (Sep. 20, 2019) --- Jasmal Cruz (fr.) topped all players with 29 digs and fellow freshman Anadys Valentin recorded a match-high 18 kills to lead Delaware State to a 3-1 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson at the Bucknell Invitational today. Coupled with a 3-0 victory over Merrimack in their previous outing on Sep. 14, the Hornets have won back-to-back matches for the first time in seven years to improve to 4-9 this season. The last time DSU won two in a row was 2012, with victories over St. Peter’s and Gardner-Webb. Also, in 13 matches this season, the Hornets have already doubled their win total from 2018 (2-27).
In the Fairleigh Dickinson contest, the Hornets posted a solid 25-16 victory in the opening set. FDU bounced back to even the match with a 25-21 win in the second set.
Delaware State regained the match lead 2-1 with a 25-20 triumph in the third set and squeaked out a 25-23 victory in set four to seal the win.
Cruz was one dig shy of her career best in the contest. She tallied 30 digs in the Hornets 3-2 loss to St. Peter’s on Sep. 11.
DSU’s Ryanne Burnett (fr.) contributed 16 kills and 13 digs in the win to record her second career “double-double.”
Delaware State will attempt to extend their streak in contests against Hampton and tournament host Bucknell on Saturday.
