Easton, Pa. (Sep. 13, 2019) --- Delaware State roared back from a 2-0 deficit to claim a 3-2 victory over Siena in the Hornets’ Lafayette Tournament opener today.
Ryanne Burnett (fr.) had four kills and Anadys Valentin (fr.) three in the deciding fifth set to lead DSU to a 15-13 victory and the match win.
Siena won the first set 25-20, and opened up a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-23 victory in set two.
The Hornets stayed alive in the match with a 25-22 win in set three, and took the fourth set 25-19 to even the contest.
Delaware State used 9-4 run early in the fifth set to take control. Valentin capped off the rally with a kill off an assist from Jelena Dukic to give the Hornets a 10-5 lead.
Siena bounced back to score eight of the next 11 points to tie the fifth set at 13-13.
DSU regained the lead 14-13 on a winner by Sydney Armbrister and claimed the set and match on an error by the Saints.
Trailing 2-0 in the match and 19-17 in the third set, the Hornets scored seven of the next nine points to open up a 24-21 lead. Burnett sealed the win with her seventh kill of the third set.
There were eight ties in the fourth set, the last time at 17-17 after a kill by Burnett. The Hornets scored seven of the next nine points, and opened up a 24-19 lead in set four on a kill by Armbrister.
Burnett led the Hornets with 17 kills and added 11 digs for her first “double-double” of the season. She had only two errors in 44 attempts for a .341 hitting percentage in the match. Dukic had a team-high 46 assists to give her 99 in the last two matches, while Jasmal Cruz topped the team with 14 digs.
Valentin tallied 15 digs and just one error on 35 attacks (.400).
Delaware State posted a .265 attack percentage in the match, collecting 55 kills and just 16 errors on 147 attempts. Siena has 62 kills and 30 errors on 162 attacks for a .198 hitting percentage.
The Hornets (2-7) will take on host Lafayette and Merrimack to close out the tournament on Saturday.
