Greensboro, N.C. (Sep. 7, 2018) --- The Delaware State volleyball team won the last three sets to defeat North Carolina A&T 3-1 at the Aggie-Spartan Invitational this evening. The Hornets dropped the first set, but stormed back to capture their first win of the season.
North Carolina A&T took the first set 25-22, but the Hornets rebounded with a 29-27 victory in set two. DSU pulled ahead in the match with a 25-23 win in the third set, and clinched the victory by outscoring the Aggies 25-18 in set four.
Hornet setter Milexa Cardona (fr.) recorded a career-best 38 assists. Her previous high was 30 vs. NJIT on Sep. 1. Cardona also tallied eight digs in the match. Delaware State libero Mia Taula (sr.) topped all players with 22 digs, one shy of her career-best, set earlier this season.
The Hornets posted a season-best .210 hitting percentage in the match, tallying 51 kills, also a season-high, and 21 errors on 143 attacks.
The score was tied 15 times In the hotly-contested second set. Delaware State trailed in set two 12-5 before clawing back. The Hornets scored 11 of the next 14 points, and pulled ahead for the first time in the set, 16-15, on a service ace by Taula. DSU was a point away from dropping the second set, but regained the lead (25-24) after a NCA&T error and a kill by Caroline Rakoski. The set was tied at 27-27 when Cardona and Ngundam recorded kills on the next two plays to seal the win for DSU.
In the third set, Ngundam had four kills and Taula collected 6 digs to lead the way. The Hornets never trailed in the fourth set, posting a .300 hitting percentage to highlight the win.
DSU (1-8) will take on UNC-Greensboro (12:00 p.m.) and Winthrop (5:30 p.m.) to close out the tournament on Saturday.
