Baltimore, Md. (Oct. 28, 2016) --- Sabina Szmajduch had 19 kills and 11 digs, while NaKia Jones tallied 12 kills to lead Delaware State to a 3-1 victory over Coppin State in a MEAC match this evening.
The scores were 25-22, 25-21, 16-25 and 25-21.
The Hornets won for the first time this season and avenged a home loss to the Eagles on Oct. 7.
Szmajduch, who sat out the first Coppin State match this season due to injury, notched season highs in kills and digs in the tonight’s rematch. She posted a .318 hitting percentage in the contest (44 attempts).
The 12 kills by Jones marked a career-high. She had just two errors on 23 attacks for a .435 hitting percentage in the match.
The first set was tied at 11 when the Hornets began to take control. Coppin State committed errors on each of the next three points to give DSU a 14-11 lead. The Hornets opened up a 22-17 lead on a kill by Kalena Wiggins off a feed from Enriquez.
DSU scored the set-winning point when Enriquez assisted on a kill by Jones.
In the second set, the Hornets trailed 20-16 before mounting a comeback. The Eagles committed errors on each of the next four points, allowing DSU to tie the set at 20.
After Coppin State scored the next point to lead 21-20, the Hornets took the next five to win the set. Szmajduch had three kills and Enriquez recorded two aces, including the set winner, during the rally.
Delaware State again came from behind to win the fourth set. Coppin State was ahead 21-19 when the Hornets scored the last six points to claim the match. Szmajduch posted three kills and the Eagles committed two errors, including the final point for the Hornets.
DSU posted a .208 hitting percentage in the match, recording 45 kills and 19 errors on 125 attacks. Coppin State had 51 kills and 28 errors for a .154 attack percentage.
Delaware State tallied 58 digs to 54 for the Eagles. DSU had six blocks (three solo) to two for Coppin State.
The Hornets (1-25; 1-8 MEAC) return to action on Sunday at Morgan State. The match begins at 3 p.m. in Baltimore, Md. The next home contest is Nov. 4 against Hampton (7 p.m.).
Coppin State fell to 2-22 overall and 2-8 in the MEAC.
