HORNETS TAKE TWIN BILL FROM BEARS

Dover, Del. (May 8, 2010) --- The Delaware State softball team improved to 9-5 in the MEAC after a doubleheader sweep of Morgan State today. The Hornets won the first game 9-1 and posted a 5-3 victory in the nightcap.

In the opener, Andrea Waters tossed a complete game and the Hornets scored six runs in the second inning. Rachel Carroll, JoJo Shields and Jordan Reid each drove in second inning runs for DSU, while Morgan State errors allowed two other runs to score.

Shields also singled in a run in the fourth inning, and Janelle Lukens drove in the final Delaware State run on a sacrifice fly.

Waters allowed four hits and one run, while striking out two, to improve to 11-8 on the season.

The opener was halted in the DSU fifth inning due to the eight-run rule.

In the nightcap, Brittany Ruark and Casey Beighly combined on a three-hitter for the Hornets.

Delaware State broke a 1-1 tie with four runs in the fourth inning. Chelsea Stern singled in two runs and Leslie Pleasanton had a run-scoring single for the Hornets in the fourth.

DSU improved to 26-18 overall this season.

The Hornets and Bears will wrap up the series with a single game on Sunday. Game time is 2:00 p.m. at the Delaware State softball complex. The Hornets will recognize their three senior players prior to the contest.
