Norfolk, Va. (May 7, 2019) --- Delaware State second baseman Jasmine Melgoza (jr.) has been named to the All Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Softball First Team for the second year in a row. Melgoza was selected to the 2019 All-MEAC First Team in voting by league head caches and sports information representatives announced today in advance of the conference championship tournament.

Two Hornets, shortstop Jordan Casey (jr.) and outfielder Jonah Cunnigan (fr.) were voted to the 2019 All-MEAC Second Team, while DSU catcher Jaelyn Baker (fr.) is a Third Team selection.

A 2019 Preseason All-MEAC First Team pick, Melgoza is tops on the Hornets and fifth among all conference players with a .402 overall batting average, highlighted by a .412 mark vs. conference opponents.

She’s also fourth in the league in hits (51), tied for second in doubles (12), fifth in total bases (72) and tied for third in triples (3).

In addition, Melgoza is fifth among all NCAA Div. I players in toughest to strikeout, fanning just two times in 127 at bats this season (1 strikeout per 63.5 at bats).

Melgoza was an All-MEAC First Team selection as a sophomore in 2018 and a 2017 second team pick as a freshman.

Casey is batting .278 and is fourth on the Hornets with 30 hits and third on the team with 14 runs batted in.

Cunnigan is batting .299 and is second on the Hornets with 24 runs scored. She’s also 15-for-16 in stolen base attempts this season.

Baker has emerged as the Hornets’ top power hitter this season. In addition to posting a .304 batting average, she tops on the team with three home runs and 25 RBI.

Delaware State will square off against Florida A&M in the opening round of the 2019 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Softball Tournament on Wed. (May 8) in Ormond Beach, Fla.

The Hornets are the No. 3 North seed in the eight-team, double-elimination tournament, while the Rattlers are the No. 2 South seed.

This will be the second year in a row that the teams have met in the opening round of the MEAC Tournament. Florida A&M won last year’s contest 8-4 in Ormond Beach, Fla.  

The winner of the DSU / FAMU first round game will face either Norfolk State (No. 1 North) or North Carolina A&T (No. 4 South) in the second round on Thur. at 3 p.m.

The DSU / FAMU loser will take on either Bethune-Cookman (No. 1 South) or Coppin State (No. 4 North) in an elimination game on Thurs. at noon.
