Dover, Del. (May 6, 2019) --- Delaware State will square off against Florida A&M in the opening round of the 2019 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Softball Tournament on Wed. (May 8) in Ormond Beach, Fla.

The Hornets are the No. 3 North seed in the eight-team, double-elimination tournament, while the Rattlers are the No. 2 South seed.

This will be the second year in a row that the teams have met in the opening round of the MEAC Tournament. Florida A&M won last year’s contest 8-4 in Ormond Beach, Fla.  The Rattlers started quickly in the 2018 meeting, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Hornets scored two runs in the top of the second inning and one in the third to tie the game, but the Rattlers added two runs in the third and fourth innings to regain control of the game.

Current Hornets Jasmine Melgoza (1-for-3), Jordan Casey (1-3) and Sabrina Quarles (1-4) each had a hit in the 2018 tournament contest against Florida A&M.

The winner of the DSU / FAMU first round game will face either Norfolk State (No. 1 North) on North Carolina A&T (No. 4 South) in the second round on Thur. at 3 p.m.

The DSU / FAMU loser will take on either Bethune-Cookman (No. 1 South) or Coppin State (No. 4 North) in an elimination game on Thurs. at noon.

Delaware State is seeking its second MEAC Tournament championship. The Hornets captured their lone title in 2008.  Florida A&M has won 13 MEAC titles, including four in a row from 2014 to ’17.
