Acworth, Ga. (Mar. 10, 2019) --- Delaware State overcame a seven-run deficit vs. Tennessee State, but lost the game on a walk-off homer to fall 8-7 in the Hornets’ finale at the 2019 HBCU Classic today.

DSU was winless in five games, including a 9-1 setback to Jackson State, earlier Sunday.

In the Tennessee State contest, the Hornets gave up four runs in the first inning and three in the second to trail 7-0.

Delaware State got back into the game with seven runs in the fifth inning. The Hornets had just two hits in the inning, taking advantage of three TSU errors and two wild pitches during the at bat. Jordan Casey singled in two runs and Jaelyn Baker had a run-scoring hit in the big inning.

The score was still tied when Tennessee State came to bat in the last of the seventh inning. TSU’s first batter of the inning, Erica O’Kane hit a homer to center off Hornet reliever Alexis Goldsby to end the game.

In the Jackson State game, Kayla Owens threw a five-inning complete game and was two-for-three at the plate with a homer and three runs batted in to lead the Tigers.

Delaware State trailed 5-0 before scoring an unearned run in the fourth inning.

Tennessee State scored four runs in the fifth to open up an eight run lead. The game when halted when the Hornets failed to score in the bottom of the fifth due to the eight-run rule.

DSU is idle next week and will return to action on Mar. 20 for their home opening doubleheader at Fairfield. Game one is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at the Hornets’ softball complex.
