Acworth, Ga. (Mar. 9, 2019) --- The Delaware State softball team will look to salvage two Sunday games at the HBCU Classic after dropping their first three contests in the weekend tournament.

The Hornets opened the tourney with a 4-1 loss to Prairie View on Friday. On Saturday, DSU fell to Alabama State 9-5 before another loss to Prairie View, 5-4, later in the day.

The Hornets were held to just two hits in their tournament opener. DSU trailed 1-0 before tying the game on a sacrifice fly by Jordan Casey in the bottom of the fourth inning. Prairie View scored three runs to take control of the game in the sixth inning.

In the Alabama State contest, Delaware State was plagued by six errors. The Hornets trailed 8-0 after three innings. DSU attempted to claw back into the game, scoring three runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.  Casey had three of the Hornets’ nine hits in the game.

In DSU’s third tournament contest, Prairie View scored the winning run on a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning. The score was 2-2 when Vanessa Barron smacked a two-run homer in the fourth inning, her first of the season, to put the Hornets back in front.

Prairie View scored single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings for the come-from-behind win.

The Hornets (2-12) will wrap up the HBCU Tournament with contests against Jackson State and Grambling State on Sunday.      

Delaware State softball
