Ormond Beach, Fla. (May 10, 2018) --- Courtney Mirabella tossed a two-hit shutout to lead North Carolina Central to a 5-0 victory over Delaware State to eliminate the Hornets from the MEAC Tournament this afternoon. DSU fell to the loser’s bracket after an 8-4 defeat to defending champ Florida A&M on Wednesday.

The Eagles scored all of their runs in the top of the first inning off Hornet starter Alexis Goldsby. After retiring the first batter of the game, Goldsby allowed a walk and single to put runners on second and first. The next batter, Dalika Wallace, smacked a home run to right field to give NCCU a 3-0 lead.

The Eagles scored their fourth run on a DSU error and Mary-Catherine Powell singed in the final run of the inning.

Mirabella, who struck out eight and walked just one, didn’t allow a Delaware State hit until Jasmine Melgoza singled to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning.

Sabrina Quarles doubled with two outs in the sixth to account for the other Hornet hit.

Hannah Shields pitched 6.2 shutout innings of relief for Delaware State.

The Hornets ended their 2018 season with an overall record of 12-36.
