Dover, Del. (May 7, 2018) --- Delaware State will take on two-time defending champ Florida A&M in the opening round of the 2018 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Softball Tournament in Ormond Beach, Fla., on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. The Hornets needed a win in their regular season finale against Hampton last Sunday to make the field.
Delaware State (10-8 MEAC; 12-33 overall) is the No. 3 Northern Division seed, while the Rattlers (11-4 MEAC; 20-27 overall) are the No. 2 South seed
The DSU/Florida A&M winner will take on either the winner of the Morgan State/North Carolina Central first round contest. The loser will also face either NC Central or Morgan State.
This will be the first MEAC Tournament contest between Delaware State and Florida A&M since 2014, a 1-0 win for the Rattlers.
Florida A&M also won a tournament contest against the Hornets in 2013. DSU’s last post-season victory over the Rattlers was in 2011.
Delaware State is led by sophomore catcher Desiree Moreno, a 2018 MEAC Player of the Year candidate. Moreno is batting a team-high .359 and also leads the team lead with nine home runs this season.
Senior Vanessa Washington is the Hornets’ leader with 31 runs batted in and is second to Moreno for the team lead with eight home runs. Washington has 33 career homers at DSU to tie for second on the Hornets’ all-time list.
Outfielder Khaliyah Flournory (sr.) is batting .303 and is the team leader with eight stolen bases (8-for-8).
Sophomore Hannah Shields is Delaware State’s top pitcher with seven wins and a 5.21 earned run average.
The MEAC Tournament elimination round begins Thursday at noon with a pair of games followed by the winner's bracket games at 3 p.m. The winners of the 12 p.m. contests will square off against the losers of the 3 p.m. games on Thursday evening at 5 p.m. On Friday, the first championship game participant will be determined following the 12 p.m. contest while the final participant won't be known until a pair of elimination games at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. The championship round is set for Saturday, May 12, beginning at 12 p.m. with the team from the winner's bracket needing only one win to claim the championship trophy. If the team that comes out of the loser's bracket wins the first game on Saturday, a second game will be played 30 minutes after.
