Dover, Del. (May 5, 2018) --- The Delaware State softball team needed to win one of three games at home against Hampton this weekend to qualify for the upcoming MEAC Tournament. After dropping the first two games, the Hornets secured a post-season berth with an 8-2 victory over the Pirates in game two of a doubleheader today.
Hannah Shields tossed a complete game and Desiree Moreno smacked a two-run homer to key the win.
Hampton won the opener 7-3 to set up the must-win scenario in the nightcap for the Hornets.
Delaware State scored first in game two with three runs in the second inning. Jasmine Melgoza started the rally with a one-out single and scored the first run on a base hit by Alyssa Diaz. Pinch hitter Vanessa Barron followed with a two-run single to eight to give the Hornets a 3-0 lead.
In the DSU fourth, Khaliyah Flournory singled in a run and Moreno followed with a two-run blast to give the Hornets a six-run advantage.
The Hornets led 6-2 when Sabrina Quarles and Vanessa Washington singled in runs to close out the scoring.
Shields allowed seven hits and two runs, while striking out one to improve to 7-13 this season.
Delaware State will begin MEAC Tournament play on Wednesday in Ormond Beach, Fla.
