Newark, Del. (Apr. 11, 2018) ---Delaware State sophomore Hannah Shields threw seven shutout innings , but came out on the losing end of a 2-1 decision to Delaware in game one of a doubleheader between the state’s two Division I softball programs today. The Hens completed the sweep with a 10-5 victory in the nightcap.

In the opener, Shields and Delaware’s Jordan Cargile dueled for seven shutout innings before the Hornets broke through with a run in the top of the eighth.

Under tie-break rules, Kaleigh Berry started the DSU eighth at second base. Berry moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Vanessa Washington. Michaela Cummings followed with a single to center to score Berry with the first run of the game.

The Hornets took the 1-0 lead into the bottom of the eighth, where Delaware’s Julia Solderitch was on second base to start the inning. Solderitch advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and crossed the plate on a Delaware State error to tie the game. After another DSU error and a walk, the bases were loaded when UD’s Mariah Kondravy singled to right center to score the game winning run and end the game.

In game two, Delaware took control early with eight runs on six hits in the second inning. The Hens also benefitted from three Hornet errors in the inning.

Delaware State got one back in the top of the third inning on a sac fly by Jasmine Melgoza.

The Hens led 9-1 when the Hornets put two runs on the board in the fifth on Melgoza’s second sac fly of the game and a bunt single by Berry.

DSU’s Vanessa Washington smacked her fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot in the sixth to close out the scoring.

The Hornets and Hens collected 12 hits each in the nightcap.

Washington and Melgoza, along with Sabrina Quarles and Alyssa Diaz had two hits each for DSU.

Kondravy was 3-for-3, including two doubles, in game two for the Hens.

The Hornets (9-23; 7-2 MEAC) return to MEAC action with a three-game series at Morgan State this weekend. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. and close out the series with a single game on Sunday at noon.
