Ashton, Pa. (Apr. 2, 2018) --- Villanova scored eight runs in the first inning of game one and seven runs in its first at bat in game two en route to a sweep of Delaware Stare in a non-conference doubleheader o Monday.

The Wildcats won the opener 8-4 and completed the sweep with a 13-5 victory in the nightcap.

Villanova scored all the runs it needed in the first inning of game one, putting eight on the board off DSU starter Jess Shalongo. Dana Morris had a two-run double, while Brittany Rusk singled in two in the inning. The Hornets were also hurt by two errors in the Villanova first.

Delaware State scored its first run when Allyssa Diaz doubled in Kaleigh Berry with two outs in the second inning.

The Hornets added two more runs on a double by Desiree Moreno in the fifth to pull to within 8-3.

Jasmine Melgoza doubled in Vanessa Washington with DSU’s final run in the sixth.

In the nightcap, Villanova scored seven runs on six hits in the first inning.

Delaware State scored four runs in the third to climb back into the game. Diaz singled in a run, while Melgoza and Berry drew bases loaded walks to drive in runs in the inning.

Villanova answered with three runs in the bottom of the third to open up a 10-4 lead.

The Wildcats led 10-5 before three runs in the fifth to end the game due to the eight-run rule.

Delaware State will visit Drexel on Thursday (Apr. 5) before returning to MEAC play with a home series against Hampton this weekend (Apr. 7-8).
