Dover, Del. (Mar. 31, 2018) --- The Delaware State softball team won the completion of a suspended game before splitting a doubleheader with Coppin State in a MEAC North series today.

Delaware State won 6-5 in the completion of the series opener that began on Friday. The score was 3-3 when halted by rain in the bottom of the sixth inning.

In today’s scheduled doubleheader, Coppin State took game one 4-3. The Hornets bounced back to win the nightcap 11-3.

When the teams resumed Friday’s contest, Delaware State scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to open up a 6-3 lead. Kaleigh Berry singled to lead off the inning, stole second and scored on a single up the middle by Jordan Casey to give the Hornets a 4-3 lead. Khaliyah Flournory doubled in Casey to give DSU a two-run lead and Sabrina Quarles added a double to bring Flournory home with the sixth run.

Coppin State scored two runs before recording an out in the top of the seventh inning to cut DSU’s lead to 6-5. Down by a run, the Eagles had runners at second and first with none out in the inning when Hornet starter Hannah Shields retired the next three batters, two by strikeout, to shut down the rally and end the game.

Shields allowed 10 hits and five runs, while striking out five without allowing a walk in the complete game win.

In game one of today’s scheduled doubleheader, starting pitcher Madison Didion tossed a complete game and Patricia Soria drove in two to lead the Eagles.

Delaware State trailed 4-1 before scoring two on a two-out triple by freshman Alyssa Diaz in the sixth to pull to within a run. Down 4-3, the Hornets had runners at third and first with two outs in the seventh, but failed to score.

In the nightcap, five Vanessa Washington was 3-for-4 with two runs batted in and four other players  drove in two runs each to lead the Hornets.

Coppin State opened the game two scoring with a run in the top of the first, but DSU quickly took the lead on a two-run homer by catcher Desiree Moreno in the bottom of the first.

Diaz singled in a run in the bottom of the second to give the Hornets a 3-1 lead.

The Hornets led 3-2  before adding three more runs in the fourth on a two-run double by Quarles and a single by Washington.

Delaware State scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away. Berry singled in two and freshman Vanessa Barron had a two-run double to give the Hornets an eight-run lead to end the game.

Alexis Goldsby pitched a complete game to earn the win in the nightcap for the Hornets.  

The series win gives Delaware State a 7-2 MEAC record and 9-19 overall mark.
