Spartanburg, S.C. (Mar. 4, 2018) --- Alexis Goldsby tossed a complete game and five players drove in a run each to lead Delaware State to a 5-3 victory over Furman in the Hornets’ final game of the University of South Carolina Upstate Tournament this weekend.

DSU’s victory was its first of the season and also snapped Furman’s 10-game win streak.

Goldsby allowed nine hits and three runs, two earned, while striking out four and walking two in the seven-inning complete game performance. Furman had the potential tying runs on base after scoring twice in the last of the seventh inning, but Goldsby recorded the third out on a grounder to end the game.

Delaware State opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the second inning.

Kayleigh Berry started the rally with a one-out single. Michaela Cummings followed with a single up the middle.  Berry scored on the hit and an error on the throw to the plate allowed Cummings to advance to second.  Cummings was at third base with two outs when Khaliyah Flournory singled her home to give the Hornets a 2-0 lead.

Delaware State scored two runs in the fifth to open up a 4-0 lead.

Flournory walked with one out and Desiree Moreno followed with a double to drive her home for DSU’s third run. Moreno moved to third on a wild pitch and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Vanessa Washington to give the Hornets a four-run lead.

Furman scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to trim DSU’s lead to 4-1. The Paladins had runners on third and second with two outs in the sixth, but Goldsby got out of the jam with a strikeout to end the threat.

The Hornets scored their final run in the seventh. Flournory drew a one-out walk and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Jordan Casey.

Moreno had five hits and three RBI in the tournament to raise her season average to .378.

Washington had two hits this weekend, each a home run, to lead DSU with three homers and six RBI this season.
