Dover, Del. (Apr. 15, 2017) --- Delaware State committed five errors, leading to four unearned runs, in a 6-4 MEAC loss to Morgan State in the series finale today.

The Bears won two of the three games in the series to improve to 19-12 overall and 8-1 in the MEAC. The Hornets fell to 12-24 and 9-5.

Morgan State opened the scoring with an unearned run in the second inning. The Hornets committed two errors in the inning, one on a throw which resulted in the score.

The Bears opened up a 2-0 lead with another unearned run, aided by a DSU error, in the third.

Delaware State bounced back to take the lead with three runs in the bottom of the third. The scoring began with two outs and the bases empty when Khaliyah Flournory smacked her third home run of the season. Three batters later, Dani Velez doubled to center field to drive home two runs and give the Hornets a 3-2 lead.

Morgan State also used a two-out rally to score three runs in the fifth, two unearned, to regain the lead.

The Hornets trailed 5-3 when Jordan Casey doubled in a fifth inning run to cut the Bears’ lead to one.

Morgan State added an insurance run in the sixth to close out the scoring.

Delaware State outhit the Beas 10-7, but was hurt by stranding nine runners on base.

Velez was 2-for-3 with two runs batted in, while Mika Lumsden had three hits in four at bats to raise her team-best average to .314 for the Hornets.

Freshman Hannah Shields (6-10) was the tough-luck loser for DSU. She pitched all seven innings, allowing seven hits and six runs, although just two were earned.

Amy Begg (11-2) worked out of several jams to earn the win in a complete game performance for Morgan State.          

Delaware State returns to action on Wed. (Apr. 19) for a make-up game at home against Maryland-Eastern Shore. Start time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
