Dover, Del. (Apr. 14, 2017) --- Delaware State scored six runs on the bottom of the sixth inning to rally past Morgan State 9-8 in the second game of a MEAC North doubleheader today. The Bears won the opener 2-1 in eight innings.

In game two, the Hornets trailed 8-3 before coming to bat in the sixth. Vanessa Washington singled home DSU’s first run of the inning. Dani Velez followed with a run-scoring single and another run crossed the plate on a Morgan State error on the play to cut the Bears’ lead to 8-6. There was one out in the inning when Jasmine Melgoza drove in a run on a single through the left side make pull the Hornets to within a run. Delaware State tied the game at 8-8 on a fielder’s choice groundout by Sabrina Quarles. The Hornets scored the go-ahead run when Micaela Cummings scampered home on a wild pitch.

DSU freshman Hannah Shield retired the Bears in order in the top of the seventh inning to secure the win. Shields allowed one run in three inning of relief to collect her team-best six win of the season (6-9).

Morgan State opened the scoring in the nightcap with two runs in the top of the first inning, but the Hornets answered with three in the bottom of the first to take a short-lived lead.

The Bears regained the lead with two runs in the second inning and opened up a 7-3 advantage with three runs in the fourth.

Melgoza was 3-for-4 with a run batted in, and Velez had two hits and a RBI in three at bats in the nightcap.

The teams combined for seven errors in game two, four by Morgan State.

The opener was highlighted by solid pitching and defense.

Morgan State scored the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning after Delaware State forced the extra inning with two-out run in the bottom of the seventh.

The Bears led 1-0 on a home run by Danielle Pitpit off DSU’s Tara Tursellino to lead off the third inning.

Morgan State pitcher Amy Begg kept the Hornets in check to maintain the one-run lead until the bottom of the seventh inning. The Hornets put the potential tying run on base when Velez doubled to right center with one out in the seventh. There were two outs when Cummings smacked a double to the fence in right center to score Velez with the tying run.

The Bears pulled ahead pinch hitter Stormy Zyzyk singled home Annisa Morales with one out in the top of the eighth inning.

In the bottom of the eighth, Delaware State had runners at second and first with two outs but Velez flied to center to end the game.

The loss overshadowed a solid performance by Hornet starter Tara Tursellino, who allowed just four hits and two runs, while striking out seven in the complete game performance.

Delaware State outhit Morgan State 8-4 in the opener. Cummings and Khaliyah Flournory had two hits each for the Hornets.

The doubleheader split gives DSU a 12-23 overall record and 9-4 mark in the MEAC. Morgan, the MEAC North leader entering the doubleheader, is 18-12 and 7-1.
