Dover, Del. (May 5, 2013) --- Freshman Nicole Gazzolla had three hits to set a new Delaware State single season record and Jenn Fischbach smacked a two-run homer in the Hornets’ 10-7 win over UMES at the DSU Softball Complex today.

The Hornets won two of three games in the series against the Hawks to close out the regular season with a 20-33 overall record and 12-6 mark in the MEAC.

Gazzolla was 3-for-4 at the plate to give her 78 hits for the season. The previous record of 77 was set by Jordan Reid in 2011.

Delaware State opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Jess Madrid doubled in the first two runs and Sandy Hawthorne singled in the third run of the inning.

The Hornets opened up a 4-0 lead when Madrid doubled to lead off the third inning and later scored on Hawthorne’s second RBI single of the game.

UMES scored three times in the top of the fourth inning to pull to within a run.

Delaware State answered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take an 8-3 lead. Rochelle Sablay doubled in the first two runs and Ashley Bennett followed with a two-run single to account for the fourth inning runs.

The Hawks refused to quit, putting three runs on the board in the fifth to cut the Hornets’ lead to 8-6.

Fischbach gave Delaware State some insurance with a two-run shot over the fence in center field to give the Hornets a 10-6 lead.

Delaware State had 16 hits in the contest. Six players had at least two hits.

Gazzolla, the MEAC’s leading hitter, raised her average to .444 with the three-hit performance.

The Hornets will return to action this week at the MEAC Tournament in Ormond Beach, Fla.
