Dover, Del. (May 3, 2013) --- The Delaware State University softball team will close out the 2013 regular season and tune up for next week’s MEAC Tournament with a weekend series against UMES.

The Hornets and Hawks will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 2:00 p.m. The series will conclude with a single game on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. The Hornets will honor their lone senior, Kelsey Lewis, prior to Sunday’s contest.

Delaware State has secured third place in the 2013 MEAC North race. The top four teams in the MEAC North and South will compete in next week’s league tournament in Daytona Beach, Fla.

The Hornets are 18-32 overall and 10-5 vs. MEAC North opponents.

Delaware State is second in the MEAC with a .313 team batting average.

Hornet freshman second baseman Nicole Gazzolla is tops in the league with a .469 average. Gazzolla has 75 hits this season, two shy of the team record 77 set by Jordan Reid in 2011.

DSU centerfielder Jess Madrid is ninth in the MEAC with a 355 average, while fellow freshman Ashley Bennett is tied for sixth in the league with six home runs.

The Hornets are 2-0 vs. UMES this season, winning 10-1 and 8-5 on April 9 in Princess Anne, Md.
