Dover, Del. (Apr. 29, 2013) --- Delaware State University second baseman Nicole Gazzolla (fr.; Coram, N.Y.) has been honored by the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) for her play last week. Gazzolla has been named MEAC Softball Rookie-of-the-Week after going 14-for-21 (.667) with 12 runs scored, five runs batted in and two doubles in six games last week.

She was 7-for-7 with two RBI in the Hornets’ doubleheader sweep of Howard last Saturday. The next day, Gazzolla was 3-for-5 with two doubles to give her 10 hits in 12 at bats (.833) in the Hornets’ three-game series sweep against the Bison.   

Gazzolla’s big week raised her MEAC-leading average to .448, number two among the nation’s Division I freshmen.

Delaware State’s Ashley Bennett (fr.; Delmar, Del.) was listed among the MEAC’s Other Top Performers last week.

Bennett was 7-for-15 (.467) with two home runs and 12 RBI in the Hornets’ six games ending last Sunday. She hit a three-run homer at Maryland on Apr. 24 and smacked her first career grand slam against Howard on Apr. 28.
