Dover, Del. (Apr. 28, 2013) --- Chloe Oro was 4-for-4 with four runs batted in, while Rochelle Sablay drove in five runs and Ashley Bennett four to lead Delaware State to a 26-6 win over Howard at the DSU Softball Complex today. The Hornets swept the three-game series to improve to 18-31 overall and 10-5 in the MEAC. DSU also clinched a berth in the upcoming MEAC Tournament in Daytona Beach, Fla. The top four teams in the MEAC’s North and South divisions qualify for the eight-team tournament. The Hornets are third in the North.

Delaware State opened the scoring with a season-high 10 runs in the first inning. The big blow in the inning was Bennett’s first career grand slam to give the Hornets a 5-0 lead. Sablay had a two-run double and Oro had two hits, including a run-scoring single, in the inning. Bennett leads the Hornets with six home runs this season.

The Hornets added four runs in the second inning to open up a 14-0 lead.

Delaware State led 14-2 before tacking on eight runs in the third inning. Jordan Stamps had a two-run triple and Sablay triple in a run in the inning, which also featured run-scoring hits by Oro, Jess Madrid and Sandy Hawthorne.

Oro had a two-run single to highlight the Hornets’ four-run fourth. Sablay singled in her fifth run of the game and Nicole Gazzolla doubled in a run in the inning.

Delaware State pounded out 21 hits in the game. Gazzolla was 3-for-5 to raise her average to .448 this season. She was 10-for-12 (.833) with five RBI and two doubles in the series.

The 26 runs were the most by the Hornets since a 29-1 victory over Maryland-Eastern Shore on Apr. 21, 2004.
