Hampton, Va. (Mar. 30, 2013) --- Stephanie Sarris pitched a five-hit complete game and catcher Sandy Hawthorne drove in two runs to lead Delaware State to a 3-2 win in the first game of a MEAC doubleheader at Hampton today. Hampton earned a split in the twin-bill with a 7-0 victory in the nightcap.

In the opener, Sarris went the distance to record her first win of the season (1-5).  The Hornets opened the scoring with a run in the top of the second inning. Jen Fischbach walked to lead off the inning and later scored on a bases loaded walk to Jess Madrid. Delaware State had the bases loaded when the inning ended.

The Hornets stretched their lead to 3-0 on a two-run single by Hawthorne in the third inning.

Hampton scored a run in the fourth to cut the DSU lead to 3-1.

The Pirates pulled to within 3-2 on a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Hampton had a runner at third with one out in the seventh, but Sarris retired the last two batters on a pop up and fly out to end the game.

Fischbach and Hawthorne had two hits each for the Hornets in the opener. Delaware State left 10 runners on base in game one.

In the nightcap, Hampton’s Bobbi Langlois and Jailynn Jackson combined on a four -hit shutout. Langlois pitched the first six innings, allowing just three single and striking out one.

Taylor McCoy was 3-for-3 with four RBI in game two for the Pirates.  

Nicole Gazzolla had two of Delaware State's four hits in game two.
