Hampton, Va. (Mar. 29, 2013) --- The Delaware State University softball team began defense of its MEAC North title with a 6-2 loss to Hampton today.

Hampton opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The big blow in the inning was a two-run double by Taylor McCoy.

The Pirates opened up a 4-0 lead on a run-scoring single by McCoy in the bottom of the second inning. Hampton added two runs in the third to open up a 6-0 lead.  

Delaware State got on the board with two runs in the fourth. Jess Madrid singled to lead off the inning. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and moved to third on an infield single by Nicole Gazzolla. After Gazzolla stole second, Rochelle Sablay singled in Madrid and Gazzolla to cut the Pirates lead to 6-2.

The Hornets had four hits over the next three innings, but failed to score. DSU left five runners on base from the fifth to the seventh inning.  

Madrid had two of Delaware State’s seven hits in the contest.

Hampton (17-18; 4-0 MEAC) has won its last six games. The Hornets fell to 4-19 and 0-1.

The Hornets and Pirates will wrap up the series with a doubleheader on Saturday. Game one begins at 12:00 p.m.
