Dover, Del. (Oct. 15, 2018) --- Jade Jamison scored her school record-tying sixth goal the season with 53 seconds to give Delaware State a 2-1 victory over Canisius in a women’s soccer contest at Alumni Stadium this afternoon. The score was 1-1 when DSU’s Mary O’Conner lofted a free kick about 40 yards from the net. Jamison ran to the post from the right of Canisius goal keeper Alana Rossi and booted the ball into the net for the go-ahead score, setting off a celebration with her teammates on the field and along the Hornet bench.
Jamison is now tied with Chelsea Boursiquot for most goals in a season in team history. Boursiquot accomplished the feat in 2014.
The Hornets and Golden Griffins were scoreless at the half as neither team could generate much offense in the opening 45 minutes.
Canisius broke the ice with a goal in the 54th minute. Hannah Morpurgo scored from close range off a perfect cross from Madeline Beaulieu to put the Griffs on the board first.
Delaware State needed a little more than 16 minutes to tie the match. Alexa Gibbs scored her second goal of the season from up close off a feed from Katrina Silva in the 70th minute to even the score.
The match appeared head for overtime before the late heroics by O’Conner and Jamison.
The victory was Delaware State’s first after trailing in a match this season. The Hornets improved to 3-10-2, while Canisius fell to 4-7-4 this season.
DSU will play its final home match of the season on Wed. (Oct. 17) against Yale. The contest is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Alumni Stadium. The Hornets will close out the season on the road at Wagner (Oct. 19), Penn (Oct. 23) and Brown (Oct. 30).
