Hampton, Va. (Oct. 16, 2016) --- Five players scored for Delaware State, including two goals by Alexa Gibbs, in the Hornets’ 6-1 victory over Hampton this afternoon.
DSU scored five first-period goals en route to its best offensive output of the season.
The Hornets opened the scoring when Morgan Pottinger (sr.) fired a shot past Hampton goal keeper Maya Andrews off an assist by Ayana Smith (sr.) in the 12th minute. The goal was the second of Pottinger’s career.
Delaware State stretched its lead to 2-0 when Smith scored her second goal of the season and third of her career on a breakaway in the 12th minute.
Smith’s three points in the match ties her with Kayleigh Leschinski for the team lead with five points.
Gibbs (fr.) scored two goals in a five-minute stretch, the first two of her career, to give the Hornets a 4-0 lead. Her second goal followed a corner kick by Jasmine Warren in the 33rd minute.
Gibbs is the first Hornet with two goals in a match since five players scored twice in an 11-0 win over Hampton last season.
About 30 seconds later, Kalyn Fauntleroy (jr.) capped off DSU’s first period scoring with her second career goal to give the Hornets a 5-0 lead.
After Hampton scored its lone goal in the 52nd minute, DSU’s Elise Pratt regained a five-goal lead on a shot by Elise Pratt (sr.) in the 72nd minute. Pratt’s goal was her first of the season and fifth of her career.
Delaware State (4-9) will wrap up the season with two home contests this week. The Hornets will host NJIT on Wednesday (Oct. 19) at 7 p.m. and South Carolina State in the season finale on Friday (Oct. 21), also at 7.
