Dover, Del. (Mar. 7, 2019) --- The Delaware State equestrian team will take on another national power in its next competition. The Hornets will battle the South Carolina Gamecocks, ranked fourth in the latest National Collegiate Equestrian Association Farnam Top 10 rankings, this Friday in Columbia, S.C.
DSU is coming off a 10-9 victory over South Dakota State University in its last outing on Mar. 2.
Led by Amber Van Segbrook’s MVP ride in Reining (72), the Hornets posted a 5-4 victory in the Western rides to provide the margin of victory in the match.
Delaware State’s Gabrielle Fournier turned in two most outstanding performances in the South Dakota State contest. Fournier posted a score of 84 aboard “Lophius” to earn a point on the Flat and rode “PJ” to a score of 86 to win in Fences.
Hornets Hunter Seat riders Sydney Wicklund and Annie Cimoli were also winners in Fences, while Wicklund also earned a point on the Flat in the last outing.
In the Western competition, Kelsey McArthur delivered a point for the Hornets in Horsemanship, while Grace Wilson and Shelbe Jarrett joined Van Segbrook in the Reining winners circle vs. South Dakota State.
Delaware State is 2-7 all-time vs. South Carolina. DSU last defeated the Gamecocks 10-6 at home when USC was ranked ninth during the 2015-16 season.
The Hornets’ 2018-19 schedule has included contests against No. 1 Auburn, No. 2 SMU, No. 6 Texas Christian and No. 6 Oklahoma State.
