Egg Harbor Twp., N.J. (Mar. 3, 2019) --- Delaware State posted a 1-1 record in Sunday championship bracket play to finish seventh in the 18-team Monmouth Hawk Flight Invite final standings. The Hornets had a total pinfall of 13,149 (185.2 avg.) in 71 games.
DSU defeated Youngstown 4-3 in its best-of-seven Baker first round bracket match on Sunday. The Hornets won the final game 222-190 to advance to the next round for a contest against MEAC rival Maryland-Eastern Shore.
Delaware State trailed MDES 3-1 before winning the next two games (203-194 & 183-171) to force a deciding seventh game. Maryland-Eastern easily won game seven 238-161 to advance. The Hawks were fifth in the final standings.
The Hornets were 11th after the opening round of Baker matches and advanced to eighth following the second round of traditional games. DSU posted a 7-6 won-loss record in the tourney.
Vanderbilt, ranked second in the latest national top 25 poll, took home the Hawk Flight championship with total pinfall of 13,176 in 66 games. Sam Houston State was second and North Carolina a&T third in the final tournament standings.
A total of 10 top 25 teams competed in the weekend tournament. Delaware State is 12th in the latest national poll.
