Towson, Md. (Feb. 17, 2019) --- The Delaware State bowling team has captured the championship of the James Brown Invitational, defeating Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference rival and national No. 6 Maryland-Eastern Shore 4-1 in the championship series today.
The Hawks, which defeated the No. 13 Hornets earlier in the day, took game one of the championship match before DSU stormed back to win the last four games.
The Hornets clinched the crown with a convincing 240-169 victory in the final game.
Earlier Sunday, Delaware State defeated No. 23 Duquesne 4-1, highlighted by a season best pinfall of 269 in the opening game.
In Saturday’s traditional contests, the Hornets posted a perfect 5-0 record with wins over Bowie State, Virginia State, Duquesne, Felician and Wilmington.
DSU freshman Stefany Toala rolled a career-best 279 vs. Virginia State, the top single-game mark in the MEAC this season. Toala was tied for the previous league-high (278) entering the weekend.
Elizaberth Laird (sr.) and Katie Robb (fr.) also recorded season single-game highs in Saturday’s traditional matches.
