Reading, Pa. (Jan. 19, 2019) --- Delaware State dropped three of five traditional matches to stand in seventh place after day two of the 28-team Kutztown Invitational today.

The nationally-ranked Hornets (No. 13) opened their Saturday competition with a 965-917 loss to No. 10 Stephen F. Austin. DSU fell to 0-2 on the day after a 976-896 setback to No. 22 Maryville (Mo.).

Delaware State picked up its first win of the day with a 1006-992 victory over No. 11 and defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champ North Carolina A&T.

The Hornets collected their second straight win, topping LIU Post 942-874 to even their record for the day.

DSU finished the day with a 1036-973 loss to No. 5 Sam Houston State.

The Hornets were in fourth place after posting a 4-1 record in the tournament’s opening day on Friday.

A total of 20 of the top 25 teams in the National Tenpin Coaches Association poll are competing in the Kutztown Invite.

Individually, Melissa Ortega was tops on the Hornets and 38th among 182 competitors with a five-game total pinfall of 981 (196.2). Stephany Toala posted DSU’s second-best performance of the day at 970 (194.0) to stand at 42nd in the field.

No. 4 ranked Arkansas State and Stephen F. Austin are tied for first in the team standings with overall records of 9-1.

The tournament concludes with bracket play on Sunday. The Hornets will face Youngstown State in their opener on Sunday.  

Delaware State bowling
