Dover, Del. (Nov. 12, 2017) --- Delaware State is off to a good start in defense of its MEAC North bowling title. The Hornets topped all teams with a 7-1 record in the opening MEAC North competition of the 2017-18 season in Baltimore this weekend, one game better than second place Maryland-Eastern Shore.
DSU posted a 4-0 record in Saturday’s regular team play and won three of four contests in today’s Baker contests.
The Hornets opened regular team play with a 1026-905 victory over Maryland-Eastern Shore, the defending MEAC Tournament champ. DSU also defeated Morgan State (1026-921), Coppin State (939-936) and Howard (941-840) in Saturday matches.
Delaware State won its first two Baker games, 1003-926 over Morgan State and 936-838 vs. Howard, before falling to Maryland-Eastern Shore (935-962). The Hornets bounced back to close out Baker competition with a 1067-803 victory over Coppin State.
Individually, sophomore Alexis Neuer led the Hornets with a total pinfall of 887 for an average of 221.8 in four traditional games. Neuer, a Preseason All-MEAC First Team selection, topped the 200-mark in each game, including a season-best 247 in the opener against MDES.
Senior Chelsey Merklinger was second on the team with a 214.0 average, totaling 856 in four contests, highlighted by a score 226 in the opener. She also rolled at least 200 in each game.
Delaware State, ranked 12th in the preseason national coaches poll, is now 25-7 overall this season, 13-1 in traditional games and 12-5 in Baker matches.
The next MEAC North competition is set for Dec. 2-3 in Millsboro, Del.
