Dover, Del. (Nov. 7, 2017) --- Delaware State junior Olivia Laird has been cited by the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference for her performance last weekend. Laird was named MEAC Bowler-of-the-Week after averaging 205.2 pins in traditional play at the Sam Houston State Track Kat Klash, ranking ninth among 140 bowlers. She helped the Hornets pick up seven wins over Top-25 programs over the weekend, and in traditional play, she broke 200 in four of her five games – including a weekend-best 225 against Youngstown State.
She is the second Hornet to earn the MEAC honor this season, joining senior Elizabeth Burkholder, who was recognized by the league for her performance at Kuthztown University's Bud Whitman Memorial last month.
The Hornets posted a 9-4 overall record to finish seventh in the 21-team Sam Houston State Tournament field. DSU was 4-1 in regular team games and 5-3 in Baker contests in the tournament.
The highlight of Delaware State’s participation in the tournament was three Baker victories against Vanderbilt, ranked fourth in the National Tenpin Coaches Association preseason poll. The Hornets defeated the Commodores 972-914 on the opening day of the tourney. DSU knocked off Vandy twice in Baker Quad matches on Sunday, winning 4-0 and 4-1 in the best-of-seven series.
The Hornets also posted weekend wins against preseason No. 3 Arkansas State, No. 10 Central Missouri, No. 18 North Carolina A&T and No. 24 Youngstown State.
Three of Delaware State four weekend losses were to nationally ranked squads. The Hornets dropped Baker contests to No. 2 Nebraska, No. 6 Stephen F. Austin and No. 7 UMES.
Delaware State, ranked 12th in the national preseason poll, has an overall record of 18-5 after two tournament this season. The Hornets are 9-1 in regular team games and 9-4 in Baker matches this year.
