Baltimore, MD (Jan 22) --- The Delaware State Lady Hornets defeated the Morgan State Bears Monday evening by the score of 62-54 at the Hill Field House. The Lady Hornets led for most of the game and improved their record to 3-17 overall; 2-5 in the conference.
Delaware State opened the game up on a 10-2 run, all of the points during that spurt were by Lanayjha Ashe and NaJai Pollard.
Morgan State responded and took a brief 15-14 lead, but Lanayjha Ashe hit a jumper with just four seconds left in the quarter. Ashe’s shot gave DSU a 16-15 lead heading into the second quarter.
The Lady Hornets would lead for the rest of the game.
Delaware State outscored Morgan State 20-10 in the second quarter. DSU led 36-25 heading into halftime.
DSU’s NaJai Pollard and Lanayjha Ashe combined for 28 points in the first half.
The Lady Hornets held a 13-point lead on three separate occasions in the third quarter, however the Bears cut the lead down to just six points at 45-39, after Tykyrah Williams made a layup with 27 seconds left in the quarter.
Ryan Jones made a three pointer with 12 seconds left in the third quarter to give the Lady Hornets a 48-39 lead, entering the final ten minutes of regulation.
Morgan State cut the lead to just 58-54, after Tykyrah Williams converted on a three-point play with 1:54 left in the game.
Williams finished the game with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Ryan Jones hit two free throws on the following possession to stretch DSU’s lead back to six points.
With 50 seconds left Delaware State’s Alycea Sharpe took a charge from Morgan State’s Braennan Farrar forcing a turnover.
Sharpe hit two free throws with nine seconds left to end the game.
Delaware State shot 20-of-56 (35.7%) from the field; 5-of 17 (29.4%) on three-pointers.
Lanayjha Ashe led three Lady Hornets in double digits with 17 points. Ashe also recorded six rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
NaJai Pollard recorded 15 points, 11 rebounds (game high), and five blocks (game high) before fouling out with 6:31 left in the game.
Ryan Jones tallied 14 points, six rebounds, and two steals.
Morgan State made 19-of-52 (36.5%) on field goal attempts, and just 3-of-14 (21.4%) on three-point field goals.
Morgan State’s Lexus Spears recorded 10 points and seven rebounds.
