Hampton, Va. (Jan. 12) --- The Delaware State Lady Hornets fell to the Hampton Pirates 66-62. The Lady Hornets record drops to 2-15 overall; 1-3 in the MEAC. Hampton University improves to 5-9; 2-0 in the same conference.

Hampton opened the second half up with a pair of free throws, increasing their lead to 15 (39-24). The Lady Hornets responded by going on a 12-0 run. The spurt cut the deficit to just three points at 39-36, with 6:39 left in the third quarter.

NaJai Pollard erupted with seven points during the run. Pollard finished the game with 23 points (game high), seven rebounds and four blocks.

The Pirates outscored the Lady Hornets 10-6 to end the third quarter with a 49-40 lead. They held a double-digit lead at 54-44, after making a jump shot with 7:34 left in the game. 

Delaware State once again fought back. Lanayjha Ashe found Arion Jackson open on a fastbreak, to cut the deficit to 58-55 with 1:42 remaining in the game. Hampton answered back with two free throws giving them a 60-55 lead with 1:00 -minute left.  

After the free throws Lanayjha Ashe received the inbound and raced up the floor past the Hampton full-court press. Ashe shot a floater in the lane it clanked off the back rim; Pollard got the rebound and put-back basket, lowering the deficit back to three at 60-57 with 46 seconds left. Hampton responded with a layup to regain a five-point lead with 27 seconds left.

Again, Ashe took the inbound pass and raced by the Pirates’ defenders, this time she made the floater, cutting the deficit to 62-59 with 18 seconds remaining in the game. Ashe then forced a turnover on the Hampton inbound.  Ryan Jones got a clean look at a three to tie the game, however the ball went halfway in and then out. Hampton corralled the rebound with 12.8 seconds left in the game and they put the contest away at the free throw line.

The Lady Hornets were outscored 37-24 in the first half. The Pirates scored 21 points off of 24 first half turnovers.

Delaware State made 22-of-47 (46.8%) shots from the field, including 5-of-14 (35.7%) on three-point field goals.

Ryan Jones and Lanayjha Ashe combined for 26 points.

Hampton shot just 20-of-67 (29.9%) from the floor, and only 1-16 (6.3%) on three-pointers.

Ashley Bates led three Pirates in double figures with 22 points.

Up next for the Lady Hornets is a matchup at FAMU on Monday Jan. 18th. Tip-off is set for 6:00 pm.
