Newark, Del. (Nov. 12) --- The Delaware State Lady Hornets stun the Delaware Blue Hens 67-64 on Tuesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center. Blue Hen guard Paris McBride’s desperation shot was no good as time expired. There was eight ties and eight lead changes in the contest. This is the Lady Hornets first victory over the Blue Hens in program history.
“It feels great i'm not going to lie, it’s a win in November but it’s a big win.” Coach Caputo explained. “To have that happen this early, feels really good, it’s great for the University it puts us on the map.”
Lyric Turner made both of her free throws with 12 seconds left giving DSU a 67-64 lead.
McBride drained a three pointer, with 13 seconds left to cut the deficit to just one at 65-64.
Sharajah Collins knocked down both of her free throws to give the Lady Hornets a 65-61 lead with 27 seconds left.
Blue Hens Tee Johnson split a pair at the line, and UD trailed 63-61 with 45 seconds left.
Senior guard Lanayjha Ashe put the Lady Hornets up for good at 61-59, after knocking down a jumper with 2:34 remaining in the game. Ashe finished the game with 10 points.
Delaware State outscored Delaware 21-19 in the final quarter.
University of Delaware went on a 14-0 that spanned over 3 minutes of game play during the third quarter. They held their largest lead at eight after Samone Defreese hit a pair of free throws with 2:37 remaining.
DSU responded with a 9-0 run of their own, Miajah Bullock scored six of the nine points. Bullock made an acrobatic layup to start the run and a tough layup in traffic after grabbing an offensive rebound to cap off the DSU spurt with 22 seconds left in the third.
The Lady Hornets led 46-45 heading into the fourth quarter.
Delaware State outscored the University of Delaware 17-8 in the second quarter. The Lady Hornets forced the Blue Hens into nine turnovers in the quarter (Delaware finished with 26 total turnovers) and scored nine points off the UD miscues.
The Lady Hornets trailed 15-11 after the first quarter.
University of Delaware made 21-55 (38.2%) field goal attempts and 8-18 from beyond the arc (44.4%).
Tee Johnson led the Blue Hens with 20 points, three steals, three assists and one block.
Delaware State shot 24-60 (40.0%) from the field, but just 2-9 on three-point attempts (22.2%).
DSU guard Sharajah Collins led all scorers with a career high 24 points (17 in the second half), she also added four assists and four steals.
"We really wanted it, even through the mistakes and we pulled (the win) off." Said Collins. “My mentality was to attack, get to the basket get the easy points.”
Tierra Floyd had a game high 11 rebounds, Floyd also had six points, three blocks, one steal and an assist.
Zoe Holmes added eight points and five rebounds. Holmes also led the team in plus/minus with a +11.
“I heard that (University of Delaware) has been on a winning streak, With Genell (Addison) and Lanayjha (Ashe) (as seniors) it was very important for us newcomers to get that win that they wanted for their senior year and also this is a huge confidence booster” said Holmes.

1. The Blue Hens committed 26 turnovers.

3. Delaware State was outrebounded 48-29.
