Norfolk, Va. (Jan. 5) --- A slow start by the Lady Hornets leads to a 63-50 defeat against the Norfolk State Spartans in their conference opener.  Delaware State falls to 2-11 on the season and 0-1 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).

Delaware State forward NaJai Pollard led the team with 14 points and nine rebounds, while guard Lanayjha Ashe added 13 points, three rebounds and two assists.

Norfolk State jumped out to a 10-2 run to start the game.  They were able to extend the lead up to thirteen with 1:14 left in the first quarter.

Delaware State shot just 3-of-13 (23.1%) from the field in the first quarter. While Norfolk State made 7-of-15 (46.7%) of their field goal attempts.

The Lady Hornets cut the deficit to just six with 5:32 left in the first half, after Lanayjha Ashe split a pair at the free throw line.

However, the Spartans, regained their double-digit lead and led 30-19 heading into halftime.

Delaware State was unable to make inroads during the third quarter, as both teams scored 18 points.

The Spartans started the fourth quarter with a 9-0 run to end the game.

The Lady Hornets never led in the game.

Delaware State shot just 18-of-60 (30.0%) on field goal attempts, 4-of-12 (33.3%) on three-point attempts, and 10-of-13 (76.9%) from the free throw line.

Norfolk State made 23-of-54 (42.6%) from the field, 3-of-19 (15.8%) from beyond-the-arc, and 14-of-21 (66.7%) from the charity stripe.

1. DSU was outscored 34-22 in points in the paint.
2. Delaware State committed 23 turnovers.
3. The Lady Hornets only recorded five assists.

The Lady Hornets will have their conference home opener vs Coppin State on Jan 7. Tip-off is at 5:30 pm.
